About Alvernia READS
Alvernia READS is in it's second year at Alvernia and is run through the Holleran Center for Community Engagement. This program is dedicated to promoting childhood literacy and improving academic achievement among the youth of Reading. Our aim, with the help of the Greater Reading Cops N Kids program, is to get more books into the hands of underprivileged children and provide them with an increased sense of confidence when dealing with their schoolwork.
This year Alvernia READS will be working with Tyson-Schoener and Millmont Elementary Schools, St. Joseph's Parish After-school Program, the South Reading Youth Initiative and other organizations within the Greater Reading community.
Alvernia READS is coordinated by an AmeriCorps*VISTA member, Heather Shainline. Heather is a recent graduate of Alvernia and has a great interest in working with the young people of the City of Reading. Heather's office is located in the Holleran Center in Bernardine Hall, Suite 1105.
