Volunteer with the South Reading Youth Initiative
Check out the March SRYI Scoop! In this edition you will find out all about how the South Reading Youth Initiative is incorporating science into its program.
The South Reading Youth Initiative serves children ages 7-14 that live and/or attend school in South Reading. An average of 45-50 students attend the after-school program on a regular basis.
There are also weekend events about once a month that volunteers are both encouraged to attend, and needed!
Please check out the SRYI Events Page to learn more about the programs that are currently being held for participants of the South Reading Youth Initiative.
Contact 610-568-1527 for more information!
The students that attend the after-school programs are mainly Hispanic. They are primarily from the Dominican Republic or of Puerto Rican descent. All of our students, with the exception of one or two, speak English fluently, while coming from Spanish-speaking homes. This is a great opportunity for Alvernia student volunteers interested in working with kids from a different culture, as well learning more about working academically with students with a primary language background other than English.
Monday - Thursday (St. Peter's Church)
Currently on summer schedule will start after-school programming again come Fall 2011!
2:30-3:30 pm Homework Help

Directions to St. Peter’s Church:
Leave campus and head towards Rt 10 on Upland Avenue. At the intersection of Rt 10 and Upland take a left. Be sure to be in the right lane at the traffic light. Turn right at the light (intersection of Lancaster Avenue and Rt 10) and continue across the bridge into downtown Reading. The road bears slightly right. You should be in the left lane to turn left at the first light (5th Street). Stay in the left lane after you turn and St. Peter’s Church is in the first block on your left. It’s a large gray stone church. To park, you'll want to turn into the lot BEFORE the church. There is parking both on the side and in the rear of the church.
When you go to leave, exit through the rear of the parking lot. Take a left, then a right at the stop sign, and a left at the first light. That will bring you back across the bridge; take a left at the SECOND light to get back onto Route 10 to return to campus. Upland Avenue will be on your right across from Troopers.
Directions to St. Peter’s School:
First, follow the directions above to the church. Then, after parking in the church lot take a left to walk up 5th street. Cross the street at Spruce Street and walk about half a block. The school is on the right hand side. The address for the school is 225 South 5th Street.
If you do not have access to your own mode of transportation, you are more than welcome to carpool with another volunteer or with the SRYI Program Manager. Please contact 610-568-1527 for more information on carpooling.
Before Alvernia student volunteers can begin working with students at the South Reading Youth Initiative, they need to visit the Holleran Center for Community Engagement located in Bernardine Hall room 1105 to receive a copy of the Volunteer Handbook and to sign a volunteer contract, waiver, and photo release form. Please contact the SRYI Program Manager to set up a time to meet if you are interested in volunteering.
