President's Newsletter July 2016

July 7, 2016

Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

I hope all of you are enjoying some precious time this summer for relaxation with family and friends. But as we all know, our little campus on the hill never really settles down quietly. Such has especially been the case in recent weeks. Work is being finished on a new main campus entryway on St. Bernardine Street that features a stately, reconfigured boulevard shared with the Bernardine Franciscans and the McGlinn Center. The boulevard leads visitors to a new arrival court in front of our venerable “Old Main” Francis Hall and to a welcome center in the downstairs lobby. It is an entrance worthy of our heritage and our aspirations.

Even more exciting is our progress to create an innovative Recreation, Wellness, and Health Sciences Complex, known as The Plex, which will be located just across the street from our new main entrance. As the centerpiece of a compelling new East Campus, this hybrid project emphasizes wellness and development of the whole person by integrating academic and recreational programming into a single cost-effective facility. As you know, this undertaking has been enthusiastically approved by our Board of Trustees. A public announcement of our plans will occur soon.

Beyond enhancing student life and creating innovative teaching and learning spaces, the new facility will allow Alvernia to better train more of the community's next generation of healthcare professionals by expanding our nursing and health sciences programs, including our popular doctorate in physical therapy. We are thrilled by the early positive reactions to our plans. Several prominent community leaders have stepped forward to guide The Plex fundraising campaign including Campaign Co-Chairs Mike Fromm and Angel Helm and Honorary Co-Chairs Tom & Marcia Martell and Joanne Judge & Rick Oppenheimer.
