Dr. Kevin Godfrey was born in Hillsdale, Michigan. He is the eldest of five children of Alfred J. and Anita M. (Gostola) Godfrey, and has one sister and three brothers.
As a youngster, Kevin attended La Providence, a Jesuit academy for boys located in Amiens, France. He graduated from Mount Saint Francis Minor Seminary, the high school seminary of the Conventual Franciscan Friars of the Providence of Our lady of Consolation located in New Albany, Indiana. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota (1980) where he majored in Philosophy and French. He completed a Master of Arts degree in Theology at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. (1984). He then completed the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Historical Theology at Saint Louis University (1996).
In the fall of that same year he joined the faculty of Alvernia College, now Alvernia University. Dr. Godfrey is Associate Professor of Theology. At Alvernia, in addition to teaching, he has served in a variety leadership roles, including President of the Faculty Council and Chair of the Department of the Humanities. In 2007, he was named Dean of the Division of Arts and Sciences. At the Honors Convocation in 2007, he was awarded the Christian R and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Excellence.
Dr. Godfrey has published articles and delivered scholarly papers at national and international conferences on a variety of topics in Historical Theology and Christian Spirituality. His most sustained areas of interest for research are the Franciscan Tradition and the theology of John Henry Cardinal Newman. He has served as convener and moderator of the Thought of John Henry Newman Group of the Catholic Theological Society of America for the last seven years. He is a member of the Editorial Board and also Book Review Editor for the Journal of the Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities
Dr. Godfrey strives to be of service to the local communities in which he lives. In the area of Reading, Pennsylvania, he serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Wyomissing Institute for the Arts. He is also a member of the Ethic Committee of Saint Joseph Hospital and has also served there as a member of the Institutional Review Board.
Prior to being employed at Alvernia, Dr. Godfrey served as Director of Pastoral Care at Saint Mary’s Hospital, East Saint Louis, Illinois; Director of Formation and Guardian of Saint Bonaventure Friary, Saint Louis, MO; Associate Pastor and Campus Minister at Saint Joseph University Parish, Terre Haute, Indiana; and, Associate Pastor at Saint Paul Catholic Church, Louisville, Kentucky.
