On Sept. 14, 2015, President Obama announced significant changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) process that will impact millions of students. Beginning with the 2017–18 FAFSA, the start date will move from January 1 to October 1 of the previous year. This means that students who complete the 2017–18 FAFSA will be able to submit the form anytime between Oct. 1, 2016 and June 30, 2018 using federal tax information from 2015.
Benefits to Parents/Students
- Tax information has already been filed with the IRS because FAFSA is asking for income from the current tax year of 2015 for 2017-18
- You may be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool earlier in the application process
- With 3 extra months, you may feel less pressure to rush to complete the FAFSA
- Students new to Alvernia University will receive their financial aid package earlier and have more time to review their financial aid awards and make more informed decisions on affordability and where to attend next fall
