Types of Databases

The two types of databases that you will be using are: library catalog and article databases.

Library catalogs Are used to find the items in the library collection

Alvernia's Catalog

Lists all of the materials purchased by the Alvernia University Library. These include records for books, journals, videos, etc. Alvernia's Catalog does not include articles.

World Cat Lists the materials in libraries from around the world. This is a good place to search for books you do not find in Alvernia's Catalog.
Article databases Are used to identify articles on a topic

Some article databases are general and cover multiple topics and disciplines. Examples are EBSCO's Academic Search Premier and JSTOR.

Many databases specialize in a particular subject area, such as CINAHL (medical), ERIC (education), or PsycInfo (psychology).
