Updike in the News

John Updike aficionados traveled from nine countries and 19 different states to visit Alvernia for a three-day immersion into the life and work of the award-winning author, during the Third Biennial John Updike Conference, Oct. 2-4.

Having grown up in Shillington, Pa., John Updike was known to have written about the Berks County area and people who lived here — often reflecting societal changes in the late 20th and early 21st century.

“So much has been torn down or taken away from Reading,” said conference co-director Sue Guay, “Highlighting Updike’s contribution is definitely something we shouldn’t overlook or forget.”
