Alvernia University’s 2017-18 Performing Arts Series begins with a performance by Broadway Bound, Fri., Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. All events will be held in historical Francis Hall Theater on the university’s Reading, Pa., campus.

Broadway Bound is an energetic tribute to the best of Broadway, featuring outstanding vocalists Maria Damore, Ben Watts, Deanna Reuben and Barry Ciabattoni with pianist Marty Mellinger and percussionist John Rozum. This program is a collaborative enterprise bringing together fabulous local musicians to perform an evening of favorite Broadway hits.

The Reading Symphony Orchestra will fill Alvernia’s Francis Hall Theater with chamber music Wed., Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. Concertmaster Christopher Collins Lee will lead principal string players in a program of string quartets by classical masters.

Partnering with Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest, Alvernia will present the Hot Club of Philadelphia on Wed., March 14, at 7:30 p.m. This acoustic ensemble is dedicated to playing “Gypsy Jazz,” a style pioneered by French guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli in the 1930s. The group has performed in a wide range of venues including the Kimmel Center's PIFA Festival, Musikfest-Bethlehem and the Philadelphia Folk Festival.
