Health & Wellness Update
Health authorities anticipate another wave of H1N1 flu (aka swine flu) this spring.  One of the groups more likely to contract the new virus is young people aged 18-24.  Most people who have become ill with this new virus have recovered without requiring medical treatment.  We were able to vaccinate 629 members of the Alvernia and local communities, but many students chose not to receive the vaccination.

We continue to encourage good hand washing, respiratory etiquette and self-isolation for those students, faculty, and staff who have fevers and other symptoms of the flu.

Read about Alvernia University's policy regarding the flu and find local vaccination clinics.

Message from Dr. Joe Cicala
VP for University Life

Once upon a time, the legal principle in loco parentis governed the actions of colleges and universities. The faculty and staff were allowed…expected, really…to do their work “in the place of parents.”

Legally, those days are long gone, as I believe they should be. Personally and philosophically? That’s another story.
